Dr. Karel Pacak graduated from Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic in 1984. In 1990 he undertook a visiting fellowship in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 1995 Dr. Pacak began his residency in internal medicine at the Washington Hospital Center, followed by specialization in endocrinology and metabolism, areas in which he was subsequently board certified. He received his Ph.D. in1993 and D.Sc. 5 years later from NIH and Charles University. After working a few years in the Clinical Neuroendocrinology Unit of the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD), NIH, Dr. Pacak became the Senior Investigator and Chief of the Medical Neuroendocrinology in NICHD in 2005.
Dr. Pacak’s research has focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, especially pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. Dr. Pacak was the president of the First International Symposia on Pheochromocytoma in 2005 and he also co-founded a new Asian Alliance for the Study of Neuroendocrine Tumors in 2010.
Dr. Pacak is the author of more than 360 scientific peer-reviewed articles, 98 book chapters, and 5 books. His numerous honors and awards came from USA, Canada, Europe and Australia.
